The Portuguese School in Taunton, officially known as "Escola Oficial Portuguesa de Taunton Sports Club", was founded in 1980 by Antonio M. Amaral and the supporting members of the Taunton Sports Club. The school was established with the mission of maintaining the language and culture of the children of Portuguese-speaking families at a time when many Portuguese-speaking immigrants were moving to Taunton and assimilating to the American culture.

Today, the school continues with the mission of teaching the Portuguese language  and culture to all members of the community and surrounding communities
